New Facebook and Twitter Features

So it seems I am taking on the unofficial position of Aussie Theatre technology reporter. More people seem to read the articles about iPhones, apps or websites than any others, and I enjoy writing them. So I have decided to embrace this trend and run with it.

As always if anyone has any ideas for articles, or had something tech related that they would like to know more about then please email me at [email protected] and I will do my best to answer your query.

Todays article is on some updates that the big players in social networking have released over the past week. Some useful, some the jury is out on.

Facebook groups:

Yes facebook has had groups for quite a while!! Recently they have been reworked and souped up to make them more useful and user friendly. They have now made groups functional as tools to communicate with groups in your life. To quote the facebook press release “your family, your soccer team, your book club” and clearly many more.

The advantage is that groups are closed. The public can see the name of a group and the members (unless its set to private), but can not see the contents. Great if you want to post photos that you want your family to see, or photos of an opening night party you want to share with the cast but not with the general public.

Another very interesting addition and a first for facebook is the document sharing function, allowing you to post document to facebook and allowing members of the group to download it.

Last but not least is the new group chat. Obviously for years you have been able to chat one on one for with friends on facebook, but this allows to you chat with all online members of the group in one window. Which may prove very handy for organising functions or group activities.

New Twitter:

Twitter has also been updated recently, although it is rolling out this changes gradually so they may not have hit you yet. When you are eligible  a option will be presented as you log into twitter.com offering the “New Twitter”.

When you first make the change the biggest thing you will notice is cosmetic. They have redesigned the twitter feed to function similarly to gmail with the tweets down the left hand side opening up to more information on the right, including related tweets and more tweets by the author.

They have also added more functionality. Probably the most useful is the ability to  embed photos and videos from a wide variety of sources included flickr and youTube.

Have a play with both services and if you find more exciting uses for them then please feel free to let me know.
