AUSTRALIAN BOLLYWOOD PRODUCTIONS
IN ASSOCIATION WITH
WHAT’S ON? PRODUCTION COMPANY.
THE VICTORIAN STATE BALLET COMPANY
RAJENDRA MOODLEY’S HIT BOLLYWOOD COMEDY…
THE PERFUME GARDEN
CHAPEL OFF CHAPEL
The cast of The Perfume Garden, will consist of 5 actors and 15 dancers.
The show will be staged as a comedy/drama/satire with explosions of “Bollywood Extravaganza” mixed in for good measure.
Direction and Staging Design by Green Room Award nominee Paul Watson (We Will Rock You, Once, Jersey Boys, Tick Tick Boom), it will also have a superb lighting design by Jason Bovaird (The Play That Goes Wrong) and specially created Indian costumes.
It is a comedy/drama, and the lead acting company are all required to have excellent comic timing, and experience as stage (and or) screen actors. Actors may be required to do some fairly simple, culturally significant, choreographed dancing… but the majority will be handled by the movement/dance cast.
ROLES AVAILABLE FOR THE ACTING COMPANY:
ACTORS FROM ALL DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY, HOWEVER, THEY MUST BE ABLE TO PASS BOTH PHYSICALLY AND VOCALLY AS INDIAN. ACCENTS ARE TO SEEM NATURAL, AND NOT CARICATURE.
PLEASE NOTE: The role of ANAND has been cast and will be played by Rajendra Moodley.
AYAH: Ayah’s chronological age is 80. Whenever she is onstage, with the acting ensemble she will play an 80-year-old woman who is catatonic and in a wheelchair. She does not speak or move. However, when Ayah is alone with Anand she is unleashed as the Genie. Her energy is spritely. She is the Mother-Goddess personified… mixed with a menacing minx! She swears, and speaks her mind. We will keep the age open, however, the actress will need to pass as an old lady when made up. 40-80
DEVI: (ANAND’S GIRLFRIEND) Age open, but needs to pass as late 20’s-40’s. The on-again, off-again style love interest role, although this relationship is one based on arrangement. Devi needs to bring a certain amount of pressure for Anand. Is she the path he should take or will she inadvertently push him in another direction? Is Anand ready for this woman?
CHITRA: (ANAND’S MOTHER) Age open, however, Chitra is in her 60’s. A typical matriarch type role, supportive and always seen do be doing the right thing. She is waiting to bust out with her own ideas. Full of advice, opinion, knowledge and experience. Is something new on the horizon for Chitra? A chance to start fresh.
SATYA: (ANAND’S FATHER) Age open, however, Satya is in his late 60’s. The perfect patriarchal character. Stubborn somewhat and stern. Resistant to new ideas and contemporary thinking. Frustrated with Anand and where his family is heading, but maybe a new way of thinking is exactly the breath of fresh air he needs.
The Perfume Garden is a Bollywood style comedy by Australian- Indian actor/writer Rajendra Moodley. It is a fun comedy about an Indian family who own a spice shop in Melbourne. It is about magic! Magical perfumes and magical genie’s, all coming together as a metaphor for culture and life. It is fun, moving and thought provoking and it deals with issues of how we treat the elderly, and our respect for one’s own culture.
The show is full of colour and bling, synonymous with Bollywood. There are 9 dance numbers, ranging roughly 90 seconds, to 120 seconds. There will be a cast of 15 dancers each night (to consist of 10 females and 5 males), with 9 costume changes, of glamorous Indian costumes.
The Perfume Garden has been developed since 2000. It received commissioning by Playbox, and was staged at The Malthouse in 2004; Gasworks and The Athenaeum in 2007.
