The Who’s Tommy Hits Broadway in Spring 2024

Broadway is set to be electrified with the highly-anticipated return of ‘The Who’s Tommy’ in the spring of 2024. With performances commencing on March 8 and the official opening scheduled for March 28 at the renowned Nederlander Theatre, this revival is creating waves of excitement across the theatrical community. The production is a prestigious transfer from Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, where it previously earned critical acclaim and a 2023 Jeff Award.

The revival, under the direction of Tony Award-winning director Des McAnuff, promises to present a reimagined version of the iconic show that first graced the Broadway stage in 1993. ‘The Who’s Tommy’ unfolds the story of Tommy Walker, a young boy who retreats into a catatonic state after witnessing a traumatic incident, only to later rise to fame through his extraordinary pinball skills. The musical is set to the backdrop of a Tony-winning score by Pete Townshend and is an adaptation of The Who’s 1969 album, which was initially hailed as a rock opera.

The creative ensemble behind this revival is nothing short of impressive, boasting talents such as choreographer Lorin Latarro, music supervisor and arranger Ron Melrose, musical director and orchestrator Rick Fox, and a host of Tony-nominated professionals including scenic designer David Korins, projection designer Peter Nigrini, and costume designer Sarafina Bush. The production’s visual and auditory experience is further enriched by lighting designer Amanda Zieve and Tony-winning sound designer Gareth Owen, with Charles LaPointe managing wig and hair design. Tripp Phillips takes on the crucial role of production stage manager, while Bespoke Theatricals oversees the general management.

Casting details are eagerly awaited, with the task entrusted to the capable hands of Tara Rubin Casting/Merri Sugarman, ensuring a cast that will undoubtedly do justice to this riveting production.

Emphasising the show’s continued relevance and the opportunity to introduce Tommy Walker to a new generation, the production team highlights the vastly changed world since the musical’s debut and the deeper understanding of mental health that audiences bring today. The transformative journey of the protagonist is expected to resonate strongly with contemporary audiences, providing both a nostalgic trip for long-time fans and a fresh, impactful experience for new ones.
