Commercial Music Theatre:
currently playing - Perth Until May 7 the Adelaide from May 21
Tim Minchin’s multi-award winning musical, based on the much loved book by Roald Dahl, opened at The Lyric Theatre, The Star on July 28 2015. One of the biggest musicals to hit Australian shores in recent years, Matilda boasts a raft of awards including Tonys, Oliviers (it still holds the record for the most Oliviers ever won by a musical), Grammys and Drama Desk, Sydney Theatre Awards to name a few. The show remained in Sydney until February 2016 and transferred to the Princess Theatre Melbourne in March 2016!
Starring: James Millar, Elise McCann, Marika Aubrey and Daniel Frederiksen in the adult principal roles.

My Fair Lady
Currently playing Brisbane
Julie Andrews will direct this classic musical for Opera Australia and GFO, opening at the Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House in August 2016. Dame Julie herself, along with Tony Award winning choreographer Christopher Gattelli (Newsies, South Pacific) were in Australia for the auditions late 2015 and have spent four weeks in the rehearsal room with the cast.
Cast include Anna O’Byrne as Eliza Doolittle, Alex Jennings as Professor Higgins, Reg Livermore as Alfred P. Doolittle and Robyn Nevin as Mrs Higgins.
Opening night at Sydney Opera House will take place on on September 6 2016.

Disney Theatricals has confirmed that Aladdin opened at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in August 2016.
Starring newcomer Ainsley Melham making his mainstage debut in the titular role and American actress Arielle Jacobs was announced as Jasmine in May 2016.
The production will move to Melbourne in April 2017.

Sydney from April 12
The six Tony-award winning smash Kinky Boots, by Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper, made its Australian debut in Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre in October 2016.
Starring Toby Francis as Charlie, Sophie Wright as Lauren, Teagan Wouters as Nicola and UK actor Callum Francis as Lola.
Kinky Boots will open at the Capitol theatre Sydney on 12 April 2017 and will tour to Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre QPAC from August 2017.

The Book of Mormon
Currently Playing - Melbourne
The Book of Mormon opened at the Princess Theatre Melbourne on January 2017.
The brain child of South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker with Robert Lopez and has played to sold out audiences on Broadway since opening in 2011.

Now Playing QPAC Brisbane
American Idiot, the award-winning Broadway musical based on the 2004 Green Day concept album, will make its Australian debut at Brisbane’s QPAC in February 2017.

Ladies in Black
Currently playing - Melbourne until 18 March, then Canberra
MTC’s former artistic director Simon Phillips (Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and Love Never Dies) brings this new Australian musical, based on Madeleine St John’s novel, The Women in Black, to life. With music by Tim Finn and text from writer Carolyn Burns, this production played a debut season at Queensland Theatre Company in 2015 and is before playing a nearly sold out at the Melbourne Theatre Company.

The Bodyguard Musical
Commencing April 2017 - Sydney
John Frost and his co-producers Michael Harrison and David Ian confirmed that The Bodyguard Musical is heading to Australia in 2017. The show will open in Sydney in April 2017 and is anticipated to tour the usual circuit.
Frost was a co-producer of the original London production of The Bodyguard, which ran for nearly two years at the Adelphi Theatre.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
Commencing September 2017 - Sydney
Producer Michael Cassel has confirmed that Broadway sensation Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will be the first musical to play in a newly refurbished Lyric Theatre at The Star, Sydney from September 2017.
Casting is expected to commence for the musical, which charts the legendary singer’s journey from schoolgirl to international superstar, later in 2016.
Commencing November 2017 - Canberra (then Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne Adelaide & Perth)
The six city tour will commence in November 2017 at the Canberra Theatre Centre.
The production will then move to the Lyric Theatre, QPAC in Brisbane before playing the other major tour cities on the live performance circuit in 2018, including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Muriel's Wedding - The Musical
Commencing 6 November 2017 - Sydney
Sydney Theatre Company and Global Creatures have come together for one of the more exciting announcements we’ve heard in a while: a brand new Australian musical based on a beloved Aussie film. The country’s premier theatre company is staging the world premiere of Muriel’s Wedding the Musical in November 2017.
Directed by Simon Phillips with music and lyrics by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall (and ABBA!).

Hello Dolly - The Production Company
Melbourne - 27 May to 11 June
Dolly Levi has been played by a bevy of stars from Carol Channing to Bette Midler. Now Marina Prior takes on the title role. Marina’s real-life husband Grant Piro, who last starred with Marina in The Production Company’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, returns to play Horace Vandergelder.
Jesus Christ Superstar - The Production Company
Melbourne - 29 July to 6 August
Rob Mills (Ghost, Wicked) joins The Production Company for the first time in the title role of Jesus. Helpmann Award winner Alinta Chidzey (Curtains, Show Boat) is Mary Magdalene and Zoy Frangos (Les Miserables, South Pacific) is making his TPC debut as Judas.
Brigadoon - The Production Company
Melbourne - 8 October to 5 November
Genevieve Kingsford, making her debut with The Production Company is in the role of Fiona, and Rohan Browne plays Tommy, the role made famous by Gene Kelly. Nancye Hayes stars as Brigadoon’s much loved matriarch, Mrs Forsythe. Helpmann Award winner Elise McCann (Miss Honey in Matilda) plays Meg Broke.
Director Jason Langley and Musical Director Michael Tyack, who created Dusty last season, return for Brigadoon.

But their son Will, about to have a child of his own, is determined to find the truth behind his father’s epic tales.
The Full Monty

Based on the smash hit film, The Full Monty (a ten-time Tony nominee) is musical comedy at its best with a highly anticipated closing number!
With a fast-paced book by Terrence McNally (Ragtime, Catch Me If You Can) and high energy score by David Yazbek (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), this Broadway team have created a show that speaks to your core and catches your eye.
Perhaps its just that everyone WANTS it to come, but persistent rumours of an Australian production of Newsies continue to circulate. During his stint in Australia for South Pacific in 2012, Tony Award winning choreographer Christopher Gattelli joked that he would love to bring the production to Australia – so we’ve got that going for us at least! Now to find a theatre…
Priscilla has already been confirmed to be returning to New Zealand in 2016 – could it be possible that the show will transfer across the ditch to Australia for a return season?
Could the boys be heading back down under? Rumour has it the Four Seasons might be walking (like a man) back in to town at some point soon.
