Broadway, The Aussie Way – Brand new industry night unplugged

Broadway Unplugged StageWarm up those vocal chords, Sydney, a brand new industry event is heading your way!

Next Monday 18 June at the Vanguard in Newtown, a brand new open-mic night for the Sydney arts scene will open its doors.

From 7pm, tapas, pizza and beverages will be available for all the hungry singers and actors and from 8 – 9pm a showcase of seven featured artists will perform songs from their current and favourite productions.

But come 9 o’clock, the fun begins as Broadway Unplugged’s first ever open-mic night commences!

Broadway Unplugged is the brain child of George Youakim, an Australian Producer currently based in New York who will also be presenting the Sydney professional premiere of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at the Theatre Royal next year.

“RIght now it’s going to be a once a month thing”, Youakim explained to AussieTheatre today.

“But if Monday night proves to be very successful and there is a demand for it I would love to introduce it as a twice monthly event – or even every week.”

Under the musical direction of Bev Kennedy with a three piece band (featuring Miss Bev and the Beverages), music theatre performers, students and enthusiasts will have the opportunity to perform in a supportive and fun environment.

“The featured artists will perform for about an hour but open mic kicks off at 9pm and goes until we get through our list, or until they kick us out at 11:30!”

“Whether you are a professional performer, an emerging artist or just interested in getting up and performing your favourite song, Broadway Unplugged is a great opportunity to showcase your talents” said Youakim.

So If you would like to sing a song or two, visit broadwayunplugged.com to register for the open-mic event then come along and belt out that signature song or test out a new audition piece in a fun, supportive and encouraging environment in front of friends, family and industry peers.

Or, just sit back and enjoy the performances of Australia’s best musical theatre talent in this wonderful regular industry night which (and here’s the best bit) is FREE!

“The Vanguard have kindly offered their space to us for free, so this will remain a free event for anyone who wants to attend”, Youakim said.

For those who know the Vanguard, it’s a gorgeous space to perform, and this is going to be one of the most exciting events in the music theatre, cabaret and wider theatre community’s calendar. Make sure you are there on June 18 so you can say “I was there when it all began”, because George Youakim has big plans.

This week’s Featured Artists include:
Margi De Ferranti
Michael Griffiths (Jersey Boys)
Jeremy Brennan (Jersey Boys)
Fiona Sullivan
Shaun Rennie (Cats)
