David Campbell returns to Dream Lover for Melbourne season
Melbourne is welcoming back its beloved “Summer Musical” this year with David Campbell’s star turn, Dream Lover, at Arts Centre Melbourne.
After a world premiere season at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre in September last year, Producer John Frost has teamed up with Arts Centre Melbourne to bring Dream Lover – The Bobby Darin Musical to Melbourne, with an opening scheduled for December 2017 in the State Theatre.
Frost, along with Arts Centre Melbourne’s CEO Claire Spencer are thrilled to be bringing the annual summer musical tradition back to Victoria.
“In days gone by, Melbourne audiences looked forward to enjoying lavish musicals during their summer holidays. Shows like Hello Dolly, The Secret Garden and The King and I opened in late December at the State Theatre and played though January and February,” they said.
Despite being the busiest man in the biz (he’s on TV hosting Today Extra 6 days a week, he’s regularly on radio, pens articles for publication in some of Australia’s biggest newspapers, not to mention his hand in the running of the Hayes Theatre Co. Oh, and his three children), Campbell will return to the stage once more to play Bobby Darin in the second ever season of director Simon Phillip’s new home-grown hit.
Further cast members for the Melbourne season are to be confirmed shortly.
It is understood that Arts Centre Melbourne will be presenting a summer musical at the State Theatre annually from 2017, adding another regular stop to the Australian musical theatre tour circuit.

What’s on my mind….Where do I start…
I purchased 2 tickets for Dream Lover for Paula and myself. Had great seats in the dress circle. We were going in by train late arvo. Have dinner, then onto the show, after that check out The White Lights….
At 2.10 pm this arvo, thought I’d check our ticket to see what time the show actually started…..SHOCK HORROR our tickets were for 2 pm..
I felt sick to the stomach, especially when I had to ring Paula to tell her we had missed the show. Our tickets were matinee tickets not evening.
At 2.30pm I rang The Arts Centre who said seeing I purchased the Tickets from Ticket Master I needed to take it up with them and there was nothing they could do because the show had already started. I then rang Ticket Master who also brushed it aside telling me the show had started and therefore there was nothing they could do. I explained to both companies I am not seeking a reimbursement. I would be happy with 2 tickets for any other night.
End result I have emailed Ticket Master to review my case.
After 22 yrs of working under pressure, meeting deadlines; multi tasking etc.
I retire and my brain had goes into complete relaxed mode.
I am so angry with myself. Paula took it rather well, at the same time reminding me that this was so unlike me.
I’m sure any future events Paula will be taking charge ……
