La Boite is calling for vibrant and diverse Independent theatre makers to join them at the Roundhouse for the 2013 season of productions bundled under the La Boite Indie label.

Now entering its fourth year, La Boite Indie is a curated season of productions – four in 2010 and 2011, six in 2012 – each playing a three week season. In 2010, relatively new Artistic Director, David Berthold decided to diversify audiences and challenge programming at Queensland’s second largest theatre and La Boite Indie was born – its mission statement; to raise the profile of exceptional independent talent from around Australia and abroad. Program Manager, Shari Irwin says “It’s critical to the ongoing health of theatre everywhere”.

“La Boite Indie is interested in all genres of live performance and past seasons have seen a mix of Queensland premieres of both international and new Australian text-based work, contemporary and mixed-media performance and live art. Our priority is to help bring to the stage a compelling show – whatever the genre.” Irwin explains.

For each indie show, the 334 seat theatre is redesigned into a 100 seat configuration providing a space more suited to independent work and budgets. The small rehearsal room can also be commandeered as a presentation space. La Boite commits financial, production and marketing support, suspends rent on the theatre and caps their percentage of the box office takings, so if a show exceeds expectation, it’s the independent that revels in the cash flow.

The 2012 Indie program includes well regarded independents such as; Sven Swenson, Sarah Winter, and The Danger Ensemble, the latter returning after a successful 2011 run at La Boite Indie.
