Short and SweetThe Short+Sweet Theatre Festival is in its 3rd year in Brisbane with an anticipated 1500-2000 audience members to attend over two weeks in November. Festival Director Sean Dennehy says the festival aims to “promote emerging and professional Australian playwrights and help enhance emerging and professional actors and directors and put their stuff infront of industry professionals and an audience in a professional environment”. In addition to the Judith Wright Centre as the venue host, this year the festival has expanded to include The Arts Center Gold Coast in Surfers Paradise, which together will host 30 writers, 20 directors, 12 independent theatre companies and 100 actors. For two weeks, these venues become a hive of activity, providing a great opportunity for theatre makers to network. Dennehy is proud of the contribution that the Short+Sweet festival brings to the Brisbane and Gold Coast cultural scene. “It brings together anywhere between 100-200 artists who may have not met before into a very collegiate environment where everybody gets to know each other and work together. So not only is it a chance for local artists to put their work infront of an audience, they also get to network with their peers”. The edition of the Gold Coast in the Short+Sweet festival is just the start for Dennehy, “It’s very exciting and the possibilities for growth down there are tremendous”. He hopes to expand further to include the Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba in the future. The Brisbane+Gold Coast 2011 festival follows the extremely successful model established in Sydney in 2002, which has grown in popularity to include Short+Sweet Festivals in Brisbane & Gold Coast, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, New Castle, Rockhampton. The festival has also expanded internationally to include Auckland, Singapore, Malaysia, Taipei, Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai. The festival is also offering sponsorship opportunities to companies who wish to target a captive arts audience. For sponsorship opportunities, please email [email protected] For more details on the 2011 Short+Sweet Theatre Festival Brisbane + Gold Coast, see the website: www.shortandsweet.org
