Sydney Theatre Company’s transplanted production of Uncle Vanya has been honored at this year’s prestigious Helen Hayes awards for their run at the Kennedy Center in Washington, USA.

Cate Blanchett, celebrated actress and STC co-director, won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Non-Resident Production for her performance as Yelena. Hugo Weaving was awarded Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Non-Resident Production for the role of Astrov.

This production of Uncle Vanya was adapted by Andrew Upton and directed by Tamas Ascher, and was a critical success when it played in Sydney in November and December 2010, before the awarded run in Washington in August last year.

Blanchett and Weaving are both currently performing in STC productions – Blanchett in a second staging of Gross Und Klein at the Barbican in London, while Weaving is starring in Les Liaisons Dangereuses at Wharf 1 in Sydney.
