Theatre should start earlier, say fans

Australian theatre-goers say shows should start at 7.30pm and move away from the traditional 8.00pm start time.

In a poll conducted on the AussieTheatre.com website, 42.1 per cent of respondents said they would prefer 7.30pm starts.

39.5 per cent said they wanted the 8.00pm start time retained, while 10.7 per cent wanted a 7.00pm start.

Most musicals and plays start at 8.00pm in Australia, but the Griffin Theatre Company in Sydney this year moved to a 7.00pm start-time. It suits those who live and work in the city, but perhaps puts people in outer-lying suburbs out of the picture.

Some opening nights get underway earlier to cater for post-show parties.
