We Will Rock You revival set to tour Australia, arena style

We Will Rock You
Ben Elton with Kate Maree Hoolihan and Michael Falzon – stars of the premiere Australian production of We Will Rock You

The Australian premiere of We Will Rock You opened at the Regent Theatre Melbourne in August 2003. Written by Ben Elton and featuring 24 songs from British rock band Queen, the jukebox musical has enjoyed worldwide success and now it’s returning to Australia as part of its 10th anniversary Arena Tour.

The show’s first ever World Arena Tour will commence early 2013 in the Nottingham Trent Arena (UK) on 27th March 2013 before rocking around Ireland and Europe. It is understood that the unprecedented success of the 2010-2011 theatre tour paved the way for We Will Rock You to make the leap into arena concerts.

“After our first 10 years in Rock Theatricality, this is the next giant step for WWRY” said Queen’s Brian May, “and the show will feature a brand new arena-size design – a big night out for all!”

The world tour will see the show visit arenas in Finland, Denmark, Holland, Luxembourg, Czech Republic, Turkey, Bulgaria and the UK and Ireland in 2013.

Dates for the Australian leg of the tour will be announced shortly. Whether the cast will be made up of Australian performers, international artists or a combination of both has not been confirmed at this stage. Tour dates for New Zealand, South Africa and Japan will also be announced in the near future.

This multi million dollar production will be directed by Ben Elton, with Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor as music supervisors, Arlene Phillips oversees the musical staging and choreography.

“This show is all about legend,” said Ben Elton.

“We take the legend of Queen and create our own fantastical story of young kids battling the might corporations who want to suppress their individuality and their love of music. They need a hero who can help them in their struggle, and we have two – the dreamer Galileo and the sassy rock chick, Scaramouche. Guess who ends up winning?”

More information to come.

  • I saw the show in 2003 at the Regent theatre Melbourne and loved it every minute, as I am a great fan of QUEEN music, specially Freddie Mercury. If you like Queen music, you will love the musical, there is a soundtrack of the show.
