The Things I Could Never Tell Steven: A new Aussie musical opens this weekend in Sydney

Hi coffee friends!

I know I’ve been MIA for a while but the glamorous Hannah Montana life of a muggle/actor will do that to you. Over the past few months of touring with a children’s show, I’ve had a secret on the side. A big dirty secret full of lies, X- rated cheating and revenge. Doesn’t sound like me? That’s because it’s a new Australian musical production I’ve been working on!

Composed by Jye Bryant, this exciting new revue-style show opens in Newtown this weekend after many workshops and rewrites over the past few years; “I had wanted to write an intimate one-act, small-cast, minimalist-set show for a while, so when the title of the show randomly came to me in 2012 I knew it would be perfect for this sort of structure.” After auditions a few months ago, 4 actors were selected from over 100 applicants to bring this story to the Sydney Fringe Festival. I’ve finally reached the stage of early 20s premature ageing when I can pass for a married woman despite still thinking its ok to wear a onesie to 24- hour Kmart and having no idea how to do tax. Joining me in the cast are Lucas Glover as the Ex, Ruth Strutt as the Mother- In- Law who hates my guts, Adam Majsay as the Father with a dark secret with direction by Alex Robson and Musical Direction by Antonio Fernandez.

The plot follows the story of Steven’s Wife, Parents and Ex- Boyfriend (that’s not a typo) throughout the year following his marriage. With the current political debate over same- sex marriage, there has never been a more crucial time for theatre that explores the repression of sexual orientation and the effect this has on loved ones.

Jye’s brilliant score encapsulates the hilarious and heart wrenching moments of the show from the first songs written in 2012, ‘Sex With An Ex’ followed by ‘Now The Bitch Is His Wife’. Highlights from the show have been performed in a new musicals showcase on London’s West End in a charity concert for Refugee Aid (Ribbons For Life) in 2016 and also in New York in early 2017 in Broad Views On Broadway.

If you’d like to see what happens when someone wears 3 different kinds of leopard print, drinks a full bottle of wine alone, and discovers gay- porn and disturbing sex toys under her married son’s bed, then this is the show for you.
