Chatting with Broadway and West End star Sierra Boggess

You may know Sierra Boggess from her starring role as Ariel in The Little Mermaid or Christine in Phantom of the Opera or most recently she originated the role of Principal Mullins in School of Rock.

Now this Broadway and West End musical theatre star is making her Australian debut! She can’t wait to come to Australia and we can’t wait to welcome here her, so we sat down with her to chat about what we can expect from the tour.

How are you feeling about making your Australian debut?

I’m just looking forward to being there, it’s a place I’ve never been before and I’ve always wanted to go. People seem like they’re really excited that I can come there and I’m really excited too! It’s always been something on my bucket list.

Is there anything you must do or see while you’re here?

I haven’t gotten that far because I feel like it’s going to be such a whirlwind. I’m open to all ideas and things people feel like I shouldn’t miss, and I don’t want to have too many expectations of things that I for sure want to do because I want to be open to anything that can happen.

Your positivity and advice inspires many young people and young performers, your mantra is ‘you are enough’, but what do you do to help yourself believe that if you’re having a hard day or doubting yourself?

I have to go back to the ‘you are enough’. And it helps having the knowledge that doubt is learned behaviour, and we can take responsibility for how we’re feeling and we can change our feelings by switching our thinking. ‘You are enough, you are so enough’ really works because the more you say it the more you really understand that it’s really helpful because most of our problems stem from the feeling that we’re not worthy or we’re not enough.

What’s your dream role, and can audiences expect to hear any songs from that role in this tour?

I don’t know! I don’t really have goals of other shows that I want to do, I tend to be the type of person that whatever role comes my way, I’m like ‘oh that’s my dream!’ But the songs people can expect are the things they know me from, like Disney and Andrew Lloyd Weber so those are some of the songs people will get to hear.

Are there any roles you’ve found most enjoyable or any songs you love to sing most?

I feel like every role I’ve played has been challenging in its own way so it’s been pretty eclectic. The show people most know me for is either Little Mermaid or Phantom of the Opera so I’m singing songs from both of those shows. So I’m really glad those are the types of songs I’m known for because then I get to sing them for the rest of my life, and I love singing them.

Can we expect anything from shows that aren’t as well known like School of Rock or It Shoulda Been You?

I’m not singing songs from those shows even though I love those shows! When I pick my songs I try and figure out what my message is and what I want to be saying when I’m speaking to people within the show so I haven’t figured out a way to write those songs in yet. But eventually I think I will. This is a show I’ve created over many years and have been doing it all over the world and it’s good because I feel like the message is also what I want to be presenting and it feels awesome to go to the other side of the world and get that message across as well.

Are there any rumours you’ve heard about Australia that you’re exciting to see for yourself?

I want to see the animals for sure because I feel like you have completely different animals than we do! I’ve heard everyone is really gorgeous so I also look forward to that. Everything! My biggest rumour is that it’s like the best place on earth, and everybody’s so jealous that I’m going because they love it and people can’t wait to share the fact that you’re going to the place that not a lot of people get to go to. So I’m excited about everything!
