Tick Tick… Boom! Video interview with Tyran Parke

Just over a week ago, I caught up with Tyran Parke in Melbourne to chat about his newest project, The Australian Professional Premiere of Tick Tick… Boom!

Parke says he is thrilled to be involved in this show: it is evident that he loves the music, the story, the concept and the colleagues with whom he will be working: Melle Stewart (The Hatpin) and Justin Smith (RENT).

Tick Tick… Boom!, written by Jonothan Larson (who also wrote the smash hit Broadway musical RENT), is described by Parke as Larson’s autobiographical rock monologue.

His girlfriend (Melle Stewart) wants to get married and move out of the city (TICK), his best friend (Justin Smith) is making big bucks on Madison Avenue (TICK…), yet Jon (Tyran Parke) is still waiting on tables and trying to write the great American musical (BOOM!).  Larson unfortunately died suddenly just before the previews began for RENT in New York. His ‘great American musical’ went on to play a decade on Broadway and win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Sadly, he never saw his dream realised, and the show continues to earn critical acclaim nearly 15 years on. Luckily for the world, his estate postumously released his first show Tick Tick …Boom!, which Parke describes as Larson’s autobiographical rock monologue.

“It is a wonderful story about an artist struggling with turning 30 while trying to maintain his dreams, live up to his promise-and please his girlfriend!”, says Parke. Parke is playing the role of Jon in the show, which will run at NIDA Parade Playhouse, Sydney for ONE WEEK ONLY. With a wonderful score, such fabulous actors and an incredible story, Tick Tick… Boom! is a must see.
