Act 2 2019 Helpmann Awards Winners

Tonight, the second half of the 2019 Helpmann Awards were announced in Melbourne.

In case you missed it, Act 1 took place last night at an industry-only cocktail event and included the announcement of the first 20 awards.

Act 2 was a star-studded black-tie gala event hosted by comedian, writer and actor, Susie Youssef, and Artistic Director of State Theatre SA, Mitchell Butel. Twenty-three awards were presented this evening in the categories of comedy, cabaret, contemporary music, musicals, opera, classical music, theatre and ballet, dance and physical theatre.  In addition, the 2019 JC Williamson Award was presented by Paul Kelly AO to the legendary singer-songwriter Kev Carmody, for his outstanding contribution to the live performance industry.

In a world-first, the cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child performed an exclusive montage from Melbourne’s Princess Theatre, which was beamed live to the Helpmann Awards at Arts Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre.

Belvoir Theatre Company was the big winner this year scooping a total of 13 awards. Counting and Cracking (Belvoir & Co-Curious) won 7 awards including Best Play and Barbara and the Camp Dogs (pictured above) won 4 awards including Best Musical and Best Female Actor in a Musical.

Matt Edwards

Matt is a past owner of AussieTheatre, working as digital director from 2011 to 2019. He is also a performer, most recently appeared in the Australian tour of Mamma Mia! and previously in the Australian/NZ tour of CATS and Enda Markey's acclaimed production of Blood Brothers. As well as performing Matt keeps himself busy in the digital side of the arts working with web design agency Emptyhead Digital
