Australian tour announced for Shrek the Musical

The Big Green Ogre is coming to Australia. Producers from GFO announced this morning that the Broadway smash Shrek the Musical will be coming to Australia in 2020.

Based on the 2001 Dreamworks film (which was loosely based on the 1990 book by William Steig) the musical is entertaining for all ages. Part romance, part twisted fairy tale and all irreverent fun for everyone, Shrek features adult-oriented humour and a cast of well known fairytale characters.

Featuring 19 songs by Jeanine Tesori, whose major works include Fun Home, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Violet, andCaroline or Change, and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire (High Fidelity), the story follows Shrek and his loyal steed Donkey as they set off on a quest to rescue the beautiful Princess Fiona from her tower, guarded by a fire breathing love-sick dragon.

The musical originally opened on Broadway in 2008, starring Brian d’Arcy James and Sutton Foster, running until 2010 and earning 8 Tony Award nominations. Subsequent productions included a US tour and West End season. Shrek the Musical was mounted by Parramatta based Packemin Productions in early 2018, but this will be the first Australian full-scale professional production.

Shrek will open in Sydney at the Lyric Theatre in January 2020 before continuing the tour to Her Majesty’s Theatre Melbourne and QPAC in Brisbane.

Audition dates have not yet been announced, but we expect they will be in the coming weeks.

Tickets for the Sydney season will go on sale from July 5 with pre-sales from 1st. For more information and to join the waitlist visit: Shrekthemusical.com.au.
