Hedwig and Ghost: More new musicals for Australia?

Whispers and the rumour mill never really die down, do they? We’ve read in just the past 24 hours about two new shows that might be on their way to Australia.

Ghost the Musical

We’ve heard about this one beforeGhost, based on the popular 1990 film, was set to make its Australian debut in 2013 following its Broadway and West End runs. There were some “hugely complicated” barriers in the way, largely technical ones.

But now it looks like it might just be back on. Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald’s Elissa BlakeMatilda and Ghost director Matthew Warchus had much more positive news about the love story:

“I heard this week that there is a plan to bring it to Australia,” Warchus says. “There is a production one of my associates staged, a fantastic touring version of the show I did on Broadway.

“This one is lighter on its feet and yet it has the same feel and all the same illusions in it. It was done in China recently and I’ve heard there is great enthusiasm about mounting it in Australia.”

It is believed the Ambassador Theatre Group is now considering the show for the Theatre Royal [Sydney].

Within today’s closing announcement for the star-studded Broadway turn of Hedwig and the Angry Inch (the role has been played by Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells, Darren Criss, Michael C Hall, John Cameron Mitchell, and Taye Diggs), there was a little nugget about the show’s potential international future.

According to Playbill.com:

“Beyond Broadway, a [US] national tour of Hedwig and the Angry Inch will start in San Francisco on Oct. 4, 2016, with productions also being planned for the West End and Australia.”

Keep your eyes peeled, folks! Who know what more is to come!

  • If Jekyll and Hyde’s “delay” really does fall into “cancelled” as so many seem to be predicting/dreading, and if Ghost actually comes through this time, maybe Jemma Rix can be in that? She sang “With You” at her ‘Random Variety’ show in 2012 and it was beautiful- as is everything she does.
