James Millar to join the US arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar
Australian music theatre star, and book writer behind such smash hits as Der Gelbe Stern, Love Bites and The Hatpin, James Millar will be joining the cast of the US arena tour of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar commencing in June 2014.
Though James Millar made the move the UK in recent years, he has never remained far from the Australian music theatre spotlight. As a performer Millar has starred in Company, Gutenberg! The Musical, Grey Gardens and Noel and Gertie to name but a few. In the UK he recently toured in the hit 80s musical Chess taking the role of Molokov.
The 50 city tour of Jesus Christ Superstar is set to be a star studded affair with Incubus lead singer Brandon Boyd to play Judas Iscariot (and he has big shoes to fill in the wake of Tim Minchin’s ground breaking performance in the UK and Australian tours of 2012 and 2013), NSYNC’s JC Chaves as Pontius Pilate and former Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams taking the role of Mary Magdalene. The role of King Herrod will be played by John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) while the title role will be played once again by Ben Forster who rocked Australian stages with his epic vocal performance in the show last year. AussieTheatre’s review of that tour can be read here.
James Millar will join this star studded cast as a member of the ensemble understudying the role of Pontius Pilate.
Noted for his signature wit, nuanced vocal stylings and skilled musical theatre commentary, that James Millar would succeed thoroughly in the international music theatre marketplace was never a question of “if” but “when.” The US tour will see the Australian star perform on some of the worlds most famous arena stages alongside a star-studded cast and it is truly a great moment to see this talented performer in an international performance on such a grand scale.
Simultaneously, Millar is also collaborating with Peter Rutherford on a new musical A Touch of Chaos which the pair work-shopped intensively earlier this year in Melbourne after winning the Arts Victoria Grant for Best New Australian Work. Though no information is as yet available as when this new show will debut professionally before Australian audiences, the presence of the Rutherford – Millar team is enough to make it one of the most anticipated original Australian musicals of recent years.
In the meantime, hearty congratulations to yet another successful ex-patriot Australian music theatre performer. We look forward to hearing word of his performances in the production. We look forward even more to his return to Australian stages. Mr Millar – Australian audiences await your pleasure.
