James Millar and Peter Rutherford win VCA New Work Music Theatre Project

The award-winning team of James Millar (writer, actor, singer) and Peter Rutherford (composer) of The Hatpin and Lovebites have been awarded the opportunity to workshop their new musical.

A Little Touch of Chaos has won the Victorian College of the Arts’ New Work Music Theatre Project, which aims to further develop the musical. Millar and Rutherford will receive $38,000 and a two week workshop in February 2014.

Supported by a professional creative and production team, the workshop will have the aim of attracting commercial producers.

Industry Consultant and Lecturer in Music Theatre at the VCA, Martin Croft said of the project result, “I am very thrilled that this process has unearthed a prospective gem to add to the world’s Music Theatre catalogue.

“The writers have a clear distinctive voice and A Little Touch of Chaos has the potential for that voice to be noticed and celebrated internationally and the opportunity to be develop into what could become the next major Australian stage hit.”

The award is supported by the State Government of Victoria through Arts Victoria and highlights the celebrated nature of musical theatre in Australia.

The show will be performed at the newly refurbished Grant Street Theatre in Southbank by third year Music Theatre students at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) at the University of Melbourne, in July 2014.
