IF I DROWN I CAN SWIM

29 January – 2 February 2013

If I Drown I can Swim

What makes a man? How does he learn and unlearn lessons passed down from generations? And what about love?

If I Drown I Can Swim is based on the poetry of local playwright and performer Maitland Schnaars. It is set in the sometimes bewildering yet compelling internal landscape of one man negotiating his identity against history and future.

With subtle whispers and brutal strength, this work weaves deeply personal themes of race, father and son roles and relationships with women, in search of what manhood means in a contemporary world and across generations.

An intimate but bold story of personal growth and survival, If I Drown I Can Swim fuses story, memory, movement and digital images to create a poignant dreamscape that will absorb and disarm with its raw honesty and unexpected beauty.
