After sellout seasons in Melbourne and Sydney, the critically acclaimed one-woman show, Songs For Nobodies, starring Bernadette Robinson will play a strictly limited season at Brisbane Powerhouse from November 10 – 20. This wonderful new play by Australia’s renowned playwright Joanna Murray–Smith, was written especially to showcase the extraordinary talents of Australian singer and actress, Bernadette Robinson. “The show is five monologues about complete nobodies – insignificant women in different walk of life and different nationalities – who have each had a brush with a great singing star of the 20 century”, Robinson explains.
“Joanna Murray-Smith has made each story very different, and I play the 10 women. The five ‘nobodies’ and the five ‘somebodies’ along the way.” In her review of Songs For Nobodies, AussieTheatre.com’s Felicity Burke said: “Everything is right with this show. It’s a treat. Don’t miss it”. The show had its World Premiere Season in Melbourne last year and quickly sold out its seven-week run, receiving extraordinary reviews with similar success in Sydney. Director, Simon Philips said, “When the show opened in Melbourne people were, much to my delight, simply transfixed by it. Many had never heard of Bernadette Robinson, they felt like she was an unknown figure and they’d uncovered a genius. She always got a standing ovation at the end of every show and people were both amazed and exhilarated by what they saw.” After the season in Brisbane, the show will play return seasons in Melbourne and Sydney due to popular demand, before touring to the USA next year.
If you are in Brisbane – do yourself a favour and head along to see this show. Witnessing Robinson’s vocal Olympics is reason enough to see the piece, let alone the beautifully crafted stories.
” ‘In those days singers really had to have talent’….Spell that with a capital ‘T’ when you talk about Robinson.” – Felicity Burke, AussieTheatre.com
