Ahead of an official announcement tomorrow, AussieTheatre.com can confirm that Opera Australia will be presenting South Pacific as part of their 2012 season.

The Daily Telegraph has reported that South Pacific, will star Teddy Tahu Rhodes and will feature a cast of mainly musical theatre performers. Set to open at the Opera House in August 2012, the show is expected to tour nationally after 4 weeks in Sydney.

It is understood that the Opera Australia production will be a replica of the recent Broadway revival, and will be directed by Bartlett Sher, who won a 2008 Tony Award for his direction of the show in New York.

“I thought it was time to move away from doing Gilbert and Sullivan all the time,” Terracini says. “(South Pacific) is a fantastic piece with really wonderful music. I would suggest the music is better than Gilbert and Sullivan.”
