It was officially announced today that the opening of Strange Bedfellows – The New Musical has be postponed until early 2012.

The musical, produced by Instinct Entertainment in association with McLaren House, was scheduled to open at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in October this year, but will now be delayed due to casting issues.

This surprise announcement comes just days before rehearsals were to set begin on September 12, 2011. The show was scheduled to run for 12 weeks at the Princess Theatre, with hopes to transfer to Sydney early next year.

The official line from the producers had been given to cast members (and agents) this week, before the announcement took place this morning.

Remaining suitably vague, producer, Spencer McLaren said,

“Like most original productions the world over, elements of a new show can sometimes take longer than anticipated to bring together and due to a delay in confirming a key cast member we need to adjust our opening dates to ensure the show we bring to the stage is the show we’ve worked so passionately to create.”

It has not been revealed which cast member has been unable to commit to the show, but AussieTheatre.com understands that the minor set-back has pushed the company at least 10 weeks behind schedule.

As for other 20-or-so cast members who were expecting to start work in just under 2 weeks, this is a major blow, and a harsh reminder of the fickle nature of the entertainment industry. For these actors, who were expecting around 3-4 months work leading up to the Christmas period, this an unfortunate turn of events and will certainly put a strain on many.

This short delay in bringing Strange Bedfellows to the stage will result in a new opening date to be announced very soon.

The show will be directed by Rodger Hodgman (MTC, Guys & Dolls, City Homicide), choreographed by Dana Jolly (We Will Rock You), Musically Directed by Kellie Dickerson (Wicked, Dr. Zhivago) and will star Peter Cousens, John Wood, Melissa Langton and Lucy Durack.
