Tina Fey announces film adaptation of MEAN GIRLS THE MUSICAL

A novel turned movie turned musical is now getting… a movie adaptation? It might sound confusing, but we promise it’s going to be totally fetch!

A few days ago, the producers of the Broadway show announced that the musical will be readapted for the screen by Paramount Pictures. The adaptation will be a movie musical (similar to that of Hairspray, The Producers, and Chicago) rather than a sequel, and will include the stage show’s score and updated storylines.

“I’m very excited to bring ‘Mean Girls’ back to the big screen,’  said the film’s screenplay and musical’s book writer Tina Fey. “It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences. I’ve spent sixteen years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe and I love them dearly.”

Producers have also been discussing the chance of bringing the show to London’s West End for 2021. “It has been a joy to work on ‘Mean Girls’  and to watch it go from film, to musical, and now to musical film,” said Producer Lorne Michaels. “I am very proud that Tina’s story and characters continue to resonate with new generations. We are all excited to continue to work with Sonia Friedman and her team as we prepare for London.”
