Find Me An Exit! From the very first few moments it was pretty clear that this play was not going to be funny enough to be called a comedy. Ten minutes into the performance my ‘plus one’ for the evening leant over and told me sternly “you’re buying me dinner!”.  We were not alone with this feeling as the audience simply did not laugh and the reason was due to the lack of funny material and originality.  Not being familiar with the previous works of writer Tony Laumberg I was suprised to discover this was his 11th play, based on legal scenarios (possibly influenced by his legal background) that had been produced. Judging by the content of this piece, full of cliches and groan gags, I assume the earlier works contained his best humour and material. The actors however toiled tirelessly to make this piece work, but there was very little chance of playing the material successfully when it was flawed from the outset.  Trudi Boatwright was clearly the stand out performer as she somehow found some grounding and understanding with her character and played a strong through line from start to finish.  Overall there was not enough attention to detail in the story-telling, there was no real comedy in the text or the deliveries, and the accents were all over the place. But the bottom line is that the audience didnt laugh, and there’s your proof when you’re dealing with comedy. I rest my case.
The season is running till September 4th at the Newtown Theatre
