Smash: A New Musical announces Broadway run

Smash is an American TV musical drama created by Theresa Rebeck and Robert Greenblatt for the NBC. With Steven Spielberg as the executive producer, the series was produced by DreamWorks Television and Universal Television. It is based on a fictional New York City theatre community creating a new Broadway musical. The cast was led by Debra Messing, Katharine McPhee, Jack Davenport, Christian Borle, Anjelica Huston and Megan Hilty.

The TV series has inspired an upcoming show on Broadway aptly named Smash: A New Musical and it is being produced by Steven Spielberg, Robert Greenblatt and Neil Meron. Bob Martin and Rick Elice will co-write the productions book with the score being collaborated on by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and will feature many of the songs that appeared in the TV series.

The premise of the show will follow the original series in mounting ‘Bombshell’ a Broadway musical within a musical highlighting the life of Marilyn Monroe.

Steven Spielberg said “I am personally thrilled to be a part of this musical and its road to Broadway….Smash’ is near and dear to my heart, and it seems fitting that a new musical inspired by what we did on the show would eventually come to the stage. I’m beyond thrilled to be working with this incredible creative team and my producing partners, who began the ‘Smash’ journey with me over ten years ago.”

Further details on the story are being kept under wraps for a highly anticipated opening night. More details still to come.
