It’s actually happening! Ghost The Musical is finally on its way to Australia in 2016 and it’s opening in Adelaide thanks to Ambassador Theatre Group, GWB Entertainment and Red Live!

In November 2011, Ghost The Muscial was announced to open in Melbourne in March 2013 (to be produced by Matilda The Musical’s producer Louise Withers) but was pulled from the Australian musical theatre calendar in September 2012 after complications with transporting the famously technologically intricate set came to light.

Employing special effects never before seen in an on-stage musical, Ghost The Musical features an incredible array of illusions – Sam, as a ghost, walks through a solid door, inanimate objects take on a life of their own while spirits ascend to the heavens and subway passengers are thrown in the air and people disappear and reappear right before your eyes.

According to Ghost The Musical’s director Matthew Warchus, who was interviewed by arts journalist Elissa Blake ahead of the opening of his other blockbuster Matilda The Musical, a touring version of the Rob Howell’s Ghost set has now been designed, and it is this version that will be heading down under.

“This one is lighter on its feet and yet it has the same feel and all the same illusions in it. It was done in China recently and I’ve heard there is great enthusiasm about mounting it in Australia”, Warchus told Blake during his interview with the Sydney Morning Herald.

Melbourne will host the production at the Regent Theatre from Friday 5 February after CATS the musical moves to Brisbane. A transfer to Sydney’s Theatre Royal, Ambassador Theatre Group’s new base in Australia, will take place from Friday 18 March and Perth Audiences will see the show from Saturday May 21, 2016.

No Brisbane dates have been confirmed at this stage.

It is understood that auditions for this production of Ghost The Musical have already taken place and a cast announcement will be imminent.

  • I am really disappointed that the musical “GHOST ” didn’t show in Brisbane. Even though tob Mills can’t sing or act at all and, in my opinion was wrongly cast. It’s a movie I love and was really looking forward to seeing how they would do the effects. As a one of thousands of people who live in Brisbane missed out. If I’d know i would have flown out-of-state to see it. We got a raw deal.
