Original Australian Evita cast reunite at Sydney opening night.
When Evita the Musical opened to rapturous applause at the Sydney Opera House last week it wasn’t the first time that Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s revolutionary musical had graced our shores.
The musical first toured Australia in the early 1980s, opening in Adelaide in April 1980 before continuing to Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and finishing its run in Brisbane in 1983.
The 1980 production starred Jennifer Murphy (Eva), John O’May (Che) and Peter Carroll (Peron) all of whom were in attendance at Sydney’s opening night. The trio had the opportunity to catch up on old times – and meet their doubles from the current cast – as they walked the red carpet
Evita is currently playing at the Sydney Opera House before transferring to the Arts Centre Melbourne from 5 December. As well as starring Tina Arena as Eva, the current production includes Tony award winning opera superstar Paulo Szot as Peron, Kurt Kansley as Che, Michael Falzon as Magaldi and new comer Alexis van Maanen as Perón’s Mistress.
