Aftermath Brett Sheehy, Melbourne Festival’s Artistic Director chose Aftermath as one of his top 3 picks of the Festival, and we have managed to score 3 double passes to give away to our readers!   Tickets are for Thursday 13th October at 7:30pm, the show will take place at the Malthouse Theatre, Merlyn Theatre and runs for 1 hour 30 minutes with no interval.  “I’m thrilled that we are doing this great American play about the Iraq war and refugees. This one is incredibly important as the debate rages in this country around refugees, and the use terms like “illegal” in relation to them. Under the UN convention, there is nothing illegal about someone seeking refugee status in another country”, Sheehy told AussieTheatre.com’s Editor, Erin James.  Created by America’s acclaimed writer/director team Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, the New York Theatre Workshop present a heartrending account of resilience and hope in the face of incomprehensible violence and shattering loss. Aftermath is a powerful fusion of agitprop, frontline journalism and theatre. This verbatim piece of theatre was devised after the creators (Blank and Jensen) travelled to Jordan to interview 35 refugees, a broad cross-section of people who fled the chaos that gripped Iraq in the wake of the US-led invasion.
“What [Aftermath] says about humanising the refugee experience, and the responsibility of the west to help is phenomenal. I love this work. I love it for it’s honesty and it’s humanity, and I love that it’s an American work which takes a really honest look at the invasion of Iraq and the ‘aftermath’ of that invasion”, said Sheehy.  www.melbournefestival.com.au  To enter our competition to win one of 3 double passes, simply fill in the entry form below!
